As with some of the best Chess/Checker gospel of this period, there's a groove here that feels more like mainstream soul of the period - no over-reaching choirs, or over-sold religion - and instead some wickedly sharp, soulful lyrics that are set to styles that are a mixture of deep soul, harmony soul, and plenty of righteous funk! So many of these nuggets were passed over back in the day - too gospel for soul collectors, and too funky for gospel fans - but they work together perfectly here in this overstuffed collection - put together with a perfect ear for all the best bits in the Jewel catalog.
